Body Mass Index � Friend or Foe?
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple test. Look up your weight on the top line of the chart and your height on the left hand side of the chart. Where the two columns meet is your index. The legend at the bottom gives you an indication of your rating.
This is only an indicator.
I am 190 pounds and am about 5 foot 11 inches tall. The chart suggests that I am overweight. Now here are some other things to consider:
- I am about 13% to 15% body fat,
- I work my large muscle groups regularly,
- I look good,
- I feel great
I am in no panic to lose weight. The BMI is only an indicator. Pay some attention to it, but also consider the other factors as I have mentioned.
A fitness lifestyle will lead towards your BMI being a close indicator but not exact.
